Studio Upstairs Mission Statement:

Studio Upstairs is dedicated to the exploration of personal experience through the work of art. It is a place where its' membership has the opportunity to experiment and think about ideas in the company of others, free from the constraint of psychiatric diagnosis. Studio Upstairs has a genuine interest in putting fine art out in the public arena.
Studio Upstairs is a registered charity, originally founded in 1988 it has one studio in London and a second studio opened in Bristol in January 2000. It is informed by the traditions of Dartington College in the UK and more recently Black Mountain college USA with their approaches to art in education, and RD. Laing and the Philadelphia association with their particular work in therapeutic communities.
The London and Bristol studios are environments for people who are dealing with mental distress, or people in drug or alcohol recovery who find that trhough creating art, both privately and publicity, they can transform their lives. Instrinsic to the Studio's ethos is the idea that studio members, managers and volunteers all produce work and exhibit alongside each other.
