Studio Downstairs is a special project of CREATE
Arts Center, a non-profit (501-C3) in Silver Spring,
MD. Studio Downstairs provides psychological / social
support to adults who might otherwise be too vulnerable
to attend school or vocational programs. We serve
as a bridge to helping people overcome psychological
difficulties which impede their successful entry
into the workforce, school, or community life. We
provide a safe, ongoing art studio program where
people can learn social and artistic skills. We
visit community artists and centers to enable members
to identify with the healthy aspect of themselves
as artists. We provide opportunities for public
exhibitions of our members artwork to further our
goals and to enhance community awareness of mental
health issues, through the arts. Community members
and artists benefit by volunteering their services
to us. We utilize the visual arts, poetry, and writing
to enhance the potential and common humanity of
our members.
